Learning to Cook

Boil

Process

Pour water into the pot—turn on the heat and place the pot on the burner—once the water is boiling (water is churning with a large number of bubbles rising), add the ingredients

Notes

  • Placing a lid on the pot while heating can speed up the process. However, this increases the risk of the pot boiling over. After continuous heating, the fluid may become excessively turbulent and spill over the edge, which is known as boiling over.
  • If the pot is about to boil over, immediately reduce the heat and open the lid.
  • To speed up heating while avoiding boiling over, you can leave the lid slightly ajar to allow steam to escape. Alternatively, reduce the heat towards the end of the cooking process and keep a close eye on the contents.
  • Depending on the recipe, ingredients can also be added to cold water. However, this will take longer to bring to a boil.
