Learning to Steam
Steam
Method
Steamer
A steamer pot has a multi-layer structure. The bottom layer is used to hold water; the heat from the steam produced when the water boils is used to cook the food in the upper layers.
Add an appropriate amount of water to the bottom layer of the steamer pot—place the food in the upper steaming trays—place the steamer pot over heat to cook.
Wok
If you don't have a steamer pot and only have a regular wok (not a frying pan), you can place a trivet at the bottom of the wok and add enough water to achieve a similar steaming effect.
Add enough water to the bottom of the wok — place the trivet — put the food on the trivet — turn on the heat and cover
Notes
- Since the heat source is steam, the bottom of food in the lower steamer tiers may become wet from water. Place a steaming cloth under the food to prevent this. You can also create a simple rack using chopsticks to elevate the food.
- You can use a smart device to set a timer to remind you to turn off the heat, preventing the pot from burning out if you forget.
- While steaming food, pay attention to the remaining water level in the bottom area, especially when using a wok, to avoid running dry and creating a safety hazard.
- (Optional) When steaming food in a wok, you can place a steaming tray on top of the trivet.
